Once upon a time (like the late 1890's), the Page Woven Wire Fence company produced decks of promotional cards. These cards were numbered 1-13, with 4 cards of each number. Some of the cards had a number of miles on the top, and all of them had a series of snippets of information or boasts about the Page Woven Wire Fence Company.
The Page Woven Wire Fence Company was established in 1886 and one of the cards indicates that the company is less than 10 years old, making the deck no later than 1896. Another card says business doubled in 1894 over 1893, so I peg the deck's design at 1895.
I got a nearly complete one of these sets (missing only one card) at a farmer's market recently. I've no idea what games were originally intended to be played with it, but I'd like to know.
Obviously the old kid's standby of Go Fish could easily be played with this deck. But that doesn't make any use of the mile markers. Mille Bornes predecessor Touring was apparently invented in 1906, and there's no hint of hazards in this deck, nor are there miles on every card, making it an unlikely target game.
Hi-res scans of all the cards are found below. One card per file. Anyone with relevant information is requested to mail me as 'cards' at 'kohne.org'
